Al-Azhar Scholar Highlights the Importance of 'Malakah' in the Digital Era: The Future of Hadith Studies Amidst the Technological Revolution
The Faculty of Islamic Studies (FDI) at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) Jakarta once again held its prestigious Studium General event on Wednesday, October 2, 2024. The theme, "The Future of Hadith Studies in the Digital Era: Between Challenges and Opportunities," brought the auditorium on the second floor of the Faculty to life, with attendance from academics, lecturers, and new students of the FDI.
The event was opened with enthusiasm by the Dean of FDI, Dr. Yuli Yasin, MA, who not only stressed the importance of adapting technology for the development of Hadith studies in the digital era but also introduced the profile of the Faculty to the keynote speaker.
Dr. Ahmad Kusjairi Suhail, MA, acted as the moderator and skillfully guided the discussion. Dr. Kusjairi, an alumnus of King Saud University and the University of Malaya, led the dynamic session. The event also saw the participation of prominent Hadith scholars such as Dr. Sahabuddin, Dr. Muhammad Khoirul Mustaghfirin, and Dr. Ade Pahrudin, who actively engaged in the discussion.
The Studium General featured Dr. Mustafa Musawaq Ahmad Muhammad, a scholar sent by Al-Azhar University in Cairo, as the keynote speaker. In his presentation, Dr. Mustafa highlighted how technology has expanded access to Hadith literature but warned of the significant challenges in preserving the authenticity and validity of these digital sources. "Hadith sciences, such as Ilm Rijal Hadith and Mustolah Hadith, must serve as the fundamental standard in the development of technology in this field," he emphasized. He provided examples of platforms like Maktabah Syamilah and Alukah, which can be useful but still require strict oversight from scholars.
Moreover, Dr. Mustafa underscored the importance of 'malakah' (competency), which can only be attained through talaqqi (direct learning) with scholars. "Technology is merely a tool, but true understanding can only be achieved by learning directly from qualified teachers," he added. He also cautioned that mastery of Hadith sciences will remain incomplete if one relies solely on technology without guidance from experts.
This event inspired new students to remain passionate about Hadith studies, blending modern technology without neglecting the depth of traditional approaches.
