International Dirasat Islamiyyah Conference: Ideology and Strategies to Eliminate Islamophobia
The term "Islamophobia" is no longer an unfamiliar term to the world. In fact, this phenomenon has become an area of interest for many groups, including global academicians who wish to delve deeper into the subject. This is exemplified by the Faculty of Islamic Studies, which successfully held the 8th International Conference on September 27-28, 2022, in collaboration with the Faculty of Islamic Da’wah at Al-Azhar University, Cairo. The 8th International Conference carried the theme "The Phenomenon of Islamophobia: Ideology and Strategy," with the aim of providing understanding to students in particular, and the global community in general, regarding the phenomenon of Islamophobia and how to strategize solutions for it. This was conveyed by the Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Studies, Dr. Syairozi Dimyati Ilyas, M.A. In his opening speech, he stated, "The purpose of this conference is to study and discuss the ideology behind Islamophobia and strategies for addressing it."
The conference, conducted online via Zoom, was attended not only by students from the Faculty of Islamic Studies, but also by many others from outside, resulting in hundreds of participants in the Zoom meeting. This international seminar featured speakers not only from the academic community of UIN Jakarta but also invited several external speakers, including:
- Dr. Jamal Faruq (Al-Azhar University, Cairo)
- Dr. Amani Abdussomad (Member of the Bureau of the Secretary-General, Islamic Research Academy, Al-Azhar)
- Sa’id Abdul Lathif Fudah (Islamic scholar & researcher)
- Dr. Wafiq Muhammad Hijazi (Lebanon)
- Dr. Kholif Mu’ammar Haris (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia)
- Ali Munhanif, M.A., Ph.D. (State Islamic University Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta).
Dr. Sa’id Abdul Lathif Fudah suggested that we, as Muslims, should re-explain to the world the true image of Islam, which is a mercy to the worlds (rahmatan lil aalamiin). At the end of the conference, a discussion session was opened for participants, allowing them to express their opinions and freely share concerns and solutions regarding Islamophobia. As stated by one of the lecturers from the Faculty of Islamic Studies, Dr. Aep Saepullah, "Islamophobia is a result of ignorance or a lack of understanding of Islamic teachings, and the negative behavior of Muslims in non-Muslim majority countries." Therefore, the primary responsibility of a Muslim is to understand the factors that contribute to Islamophobia in order to protect and preserve the Muslim community worldwide.
