The Benefits of Fasting for Social Life
The Benefits of Fasting for Social Life

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuh

In this blessed month of Ramadan, let us reflect on the benefits of fasting for our social life. When we fast, we automatically refrain from eating between Fajr (dawn) and Maghrib (sunset). Although daily tasks such as work or study continue as usual, the practice of having lunch becomes out of reach. This restriction should be a moment of reflection, inspiring us to empathize with our brothers and sisters who may face this reality continuously—not just in Ramadan but perhaps throughout the entire year.

The hunger we experience for a few hours is nothing compared to the suffering of those who may go days without food. Fasting should inspire us to better understand and feel the lack they experience, turning this empathy into real action.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us the importance of feeding those who are fasting, with a promise of double rewards, without diminishing the reward of the one who fasts. He said:

"Whoever feeds a fasting person will have a reward like theirs, without diminishing their reward in the slightest."

Additionally, during Ramadan, we may struggle to find time to eat together as a family due to busy schedules. Yet, Ramadan brings families together at the iftar table, strengthening familial bonds. Activities such as Tarawih prayers at the mosque also provide an opportunity to meet neighbors we may seldom see, fostering stronger social connections in our community.

Another benefit of fasting in Ramadan is that it trains us to avoid behaviors that could harm others. The serene and patient atmosphere of Ramadan reminds us of the importance of controlling our words and actions. The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said that those who fast yet continue to gossip or bully others will not reap the full rewards of fasting.

Thus, the quality of our fast should not only be assessed by its ritual aspects but also by the happiness and comfort it brings to those around us. A true fast should enrich our social life as a whole.

May Allah (SWT) accept our fasting and help it contribute positively to the quality of our social lives. Ameen.
